Turn Around

Turn Around is looking for volunteer one-to-one tutors to support students with reading, writing, maths and English language, at our learning centre in St Mary Cray, outreach in Anerley and central Bromley, in school support for local schools and for online support.

Detailed Description

Turn Around is a literacy and numeracy charity based in St Mary Cray, Orpington. We offer free, one-to-one tuition and support with reading, writing, maths and English language to both adults and children. Our team of volunteers are a diverse bunch including retired professionals, mums returning to work and students seeking to gain experience and a pathway to employment. We encourage our volunteers to progress in life and offer support with applying for jobs, training or career development. We are based in St Mary Cray but also offer learning sessions at various locations in Bromley, including schools, and online, throughout the week. Turn Around is looking for volunteer one-to-one tutors to support students at our learning centre in St Mary Cray, outreach in Anerley and central Bromley, in school support for local schools and for online support. All our tutors are volunteers recruited for their desire to help students and are given training in how to use proven methods to nurture confidence and engender understanding in all students. NO FORMAL EXPERIENCE IN TEACHING IS REQUIRED BUT ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE COMPETENT LITERACY AND BASIC MATHS SKILLS. TRAINING IS PROVIDED AND ALL VOLUNTEERS ARE GIVEN A HANDBOOK AND INVITED TO REGULAR IN-HOUSE TRAINING DAYS. ANY TRAVEL EXPENSES WILL BE REIMBURSED. MOST VOLUNTEERS COMMIT TO TWO HOURS OF VOLUNTEERING A WEEK. TURN AROUND VOLUNTEERS ARE KIND, PATIENT, NON-JUDGMENTAL AND THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS PROGRESS. TURN AROUND WELCOME THOSE WHO EMBRACE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND TREAT PEOPLE EQUABLY. ALL VOLUNTEERS REQUIRE TWO REFERENCES AND WE WILL ARRANGE AN ENHANCED DBS CHECK.

Time Commitment

Our volunteers give a couple of hours a week, throughout the year, with holiday breaks in line with schools and colleges.

We are 10 yards from the junction with Star Lane and opposite St Mary's Church. Street parking is available or you can park in the Nugent shopping mall car park for up to 3 hours. We are a short walk from the Nugent Centre on Sevenoaks Way and local buses. Exit the M&S corner of the Nugent, cross Mill Brook Road and bear left by the chemist under the viaduct railway bridge and we are just up on the right. Or we are a 10 minutes walk from St Mary Cray train station.
