Legacy Youth Zone
We are looking for help from volunteer Youth Mentors as part of our School Engagement Programme, aimed at supporting young people at risk of exclusion, alienated or disengaged from school and/or education. Youth Mentors conduct weekly 1-hour one-to-one sessions with their mentee for 12 weeks to help them accomplish a set personal or academic goal and promote positive re-engagement with school.
Primary Purpose: Deliver one to one mentoring sessions to young people, establish a positive relationship with mentee and encourage them to set and achieve personal or academic goals and participate in opportunities at Legacy. This role operates within and alongside the School Engagement Programme, aimed at supporting young people to re-engage in school settings. Main responsibilities To deliver one-to-one mentoring sessions with the young person matched to you, following the Mentoring Programme and Legacy's best practice guidelines and policies. Establish and maintain a positive and productive relationship with your mentee Gain an understanding of your mentee’s aspirations, talents and interests, using these to focus mentoring sessions and supporting them into activities in the Youth Zone Plan and prepare weekly mentoring sessions focused on learning objective(s) Communicate clearly and in a timely manner with the Mentoring Coordinator, complete all paperwork, reports or assessments. Follow Legacy’s Safeguarding procedures, reporting any concerns immediately.

Enthusiasm, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the progress of young people. Good written and spoken English (IELTS Band 6 equivalent), good communication and interpersonal skills and an advocate for positive personal or educational development. A positive and professional attitude to school and education, actively supporting re-engagement. Reliable, punctual and committed to a long-term volunteering role supporting a young person. Experience of working with diverse young people, taking a positive, non-judgemental, patient attitude and friendly approach, contributing to a safe and comfortable environment. This role involves working closely with young people at risk of exclusion and facing challenges in school settings. An ability to empathise and be responsive to a young person’s individual needs and cope with emotionally demanding or stressful situations. An ability to handle personal information sensitively, a strong understanding of professional boundaries and safeguarding.
Volunteers will get to be part of a team supporting young people. You will meet new people, learn new skills or share your skills and experiences with others and have fun doing so. Our volunteers can enjoy a hot meal and drink while on session and access training through Legacy Youth Zone such as Youth Work, Advanced Safeguarding or CPD. Volunteers are invited to regular social and appreciation events and are recognised for their support in our team and the community. Volunteering at Legacy is an opportunity to be part of the bigger picture but to also join an award winning youth provision that is providing thousands of young people access to a broad range of activities, enabling them to discover talents and skills they otherwise might not have known they had. This helps young people, some from disadvantaged backgrounds, channel their energy in positive and productive ways whilst making friends and learning new skills. 1-2 hours per week, either Wednesday or Friday from 4.00pm-5.00pm weekly. A minimum commitment of 6 months is required to ensure positive impact for young people.
