Volunteer ESOL/EAL Club Leader

Legacy Youth Zone

We are looking for volunteers to join our new programme supporting displaced children in the community. We are looking for help offering English Language support at Legacy and building young people's confidence and skills towards positive outcomes. This would be a great opportunity for someone interested in ESOL to gain experience and build skills.

Detailed Description

Legacy is embarking on a new project focused on supporting displaced young people in Croydon’s education and wellbeing. This project aims to provide displaced young people in the borough free membership and meals at Legacy and structured support aligned with identified needs, such as English Language support, counselling, physical activities and engagement in all enriching activities at Legacy. In this role, you will support young people to develop their English Language skills through ESOL sessions / EAL Club at the Youth Zone. • Plan, prepare and lead ESOL sessions with displaced young people either as part of a team or individually. Sessions should aim to be engaging, educational and adaptable to a range of skill levels and needs. • Provide an enriching space and environment to build communication skills, confidence, and self-esteem. • Come to sessions prepared and build positive relationships and great communication with the wider Legacy team to support outcomes for young people • Establish clear professional boundaries and build positive and trusting relationships with young people • Adhere to Legacy Youth Zone Health and Safety Policy and Safeguarding Children Policies

What skills are required for this role

Language Skills (Eg, French, German, Arabic Etc), Organising & Planning, Initiative/Self Motivation, Verbal Communication

Why these skills are required

• TEFL (or similar) qualification is desirable but not essential. • Experience or background in education, tutoring or leading activities with young people is ideal but not essential. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well in a team • Passion for supporting young people’s educational development • Ability to engage and connect with children of diverse backgrounds, ages and needs. A conscious and empathetic approach to barriers to learning and language differences. • Friendly, non-judgmental and patient approach to supporting all young people • Reliable and punctual, with a commitment to fulfilling volunteer role

Time Commitment

Weekday afternoons between 3.45pm-5.00pm, up to 4 hours per week. Flexible options available - please ask!
