Community Cafe Welfare Adviser

Chatting with customers in our Community Cafe and assisting with simple requests for information about welfare and benefits - training provided.

Detailed Description

We are looking for someone with a couple of hours to spare a week who will come and chat to our customers in the Community Cafe in the New Horizon Centre once a week. We will provide training in Mental Health First Aid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFRCdgXGlig) and Advice First Aid (https://londoncitizensadvice.org.uk/projects-partnerships/new-afa-materials) to enable you to feel confident about helping people take their first steps towards resilience and self-care. You will see two or three people during the session and much of the time will be spent chatting not just advising - it is as much about creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere as it is about 'helping'.

Why these skills are required

We are looking for someone who is friendly and outgoing who shows empathy and has healthy boundaries with regard to their own self-care. We will provide training as shown above. You will need to be confident in talking to people you don't know, and good at building trust - for this you will need patience and perseverance. We will expect you to find ways to celebrate the little successes and to support people after failure or further challenges.

Buses 255, 152, 60 and 463 stop at 'Pollards Hill Library' right next to/opposite the New Horizon Centre. There is free parking alongside the building and step-free access.
