Legacy Youth Zone
We are looking for a new volunteer to join our Library team and open the space during Junior sessions to encourage young people into reading and Library activities. We invite anyone with a passion for literature and reading, or background in teaching, tutoring or who feels they can support the Library at Legacy to contact us today and make a positive impact to young people.
We would like to be able to open the Library space for any young people to use the Library for reading, wordgames, and exploring literature and learning, building communication skills, confidence, and self-esteem. The role would be well-suited to anyone who has a passion for reading and working with young people and has a clam and creative approach. It would be a great opportunity to develop skills and gain experience working closely with 8–12 year olds and supporting their learning. Main responsibilities Foster a love of reading in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in your session where children feel comfortable Support children in improving their reading comprehension and vocabulary through discussion Plan and lead Library activities such as word games, puzzles, worksheets etc. Including around current events or themes eg. Black History Month, International Women's Day, Halloween etc. Build positive and trusting relationships with young people Engage with young people and encourage active participation in activities Establish clear professional boundaries Adhere to Legacy Youth Zone Health and Safety & Safeguarding Children Policies
Befriending, buddying and mentoring,Teaching & training
Language Skills (Eg, French, German, Arabic Etc), Reading And Writing, Initiative/Self Motivation, Verbal Communication
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work well in a team Passion for children’s literacy and reading, enjoys and can facilitate Library activities like wordsearches, crossword, puzzles and other learning games. Ability to engage and connect with children of diverse backgrounds and ages Non-judgmental approach to supporting young people from diverse backgrounds Friendly and approachable Patience and empathy to support children in their reading journey Reliable and punctual, with a commitment to fulfilling volunteer experience
Volunteers will get to be part of a team supporting young people. You will meet new people, learn new skills or share your skills and experiences with others and have fun doing so. Volunteering at Legacy will not only give individuals the opportunity to be part of the bigger picture but to also join an award winning youth provision that is providing thousands of young people access to a broad range of activities, enabling them to discover talents and skills they otherwise might not have known they had. This helps young people, some from disadvantaged backgrounds, channel their energy in positive and productive ways whilst making friends and learning new skills. Up to 2 hours on Thursday evenings between 6.00pm - 8.00pm. Also available on Tuesday evenings for up to 4 hours between 4.00pm - 8.00pm (please ask for more details). We ask for a minimum one term commitment for consistency
