Staying physically active can have a positive effect on wellbeing and function both physically and mentally. Volunteers support the rehabilitation physiotherapists and assistants with practical tasks so that time is maximised for everyone using the gym.
Staying physically active can have a positive effect on wellbeing and function both physically and mentally. Volunteers support the rehabilitation physiotherapists and assistants with practical tasks so that time is maximised for everyone using the gym. Rehabilitation helps people to • minimise the effects of a disease or its treatment • maintain independence • get relief from distressing symptoms What this role can involve • Collecting and accompanying patients to and from the Anniversary Centre or reception • Welcoming patients to the gym and being a friendly and assuring presence • Assisting people where needed with filling in exercise sheets and encouraging them in their work out • Guiding people on the use of gym equipment (with training) • Being alert to changes or problems and informing the physiotherapists • Cleaning gym equipment after use What you will not be involved in • Putting or bringing any food or drink of any kind to people’s mouths using utensils, cups, straws or any other means. • Any clinical duties • Any movement of or administration of oxygen to people What you can gain from this role • Learning new skills around palliative rehabilitation and exercise • Providing enabling and rehabilitative support to people • Being part of an enthusiastic team, meet new people and get more involved in your local community • Using and developing your skills, enhancing your CV if that is important to you • Knowing you are helping dying people in your local community have access to care and support, as and when they need it. We are looking for people who are • Good listeners and clear communicators • Interested in supporting people to be physically active • Able to push wheelchairs, bend down to floor level and operate buttons and clips etc. • Respectful of others’ differences and choices • Emotional resilient in the face of difficult circumstances that face people at end of life • Able to follow our policies and procedures to keep everyone safe • Able to represent St Christopher’s and our values positively. Training and support provided • Patient Facing Training for volunteers • Safeguarding, Data and Cyber Security on-line training • Opportunity to attend Staff and Volunteer Induction • Support and guidance from the physiotherapy team • Invitations to attend support groups throughout the year e.g. Schwartz Rounds, peer support with fellow volunteers. • Support from the Volunteering team including weekly e-newsletter • A volunteer guide – everything you need to know about volunteering at St Christopher’s. • Regular updates and training through the MyImpact app This volunteering role requires mandatory learning which will be a mixture of face to face and online learning. The Volunteering Team will contact you directly to complete this Anything else you need to know • There is a getting to know you conversation • There is a short settling in period of two months to see if the role is right for you • This group of volunteers uses WhatsApp to communicate shift changes and updates • A volunteer polo shirt will be provided and should be worn when volunteering in this role. • This role will require pre-volunteering checks, including a DBS Check. Having a criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with us. The reimbursement of reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred whilst volunteering will help ensure volunteering is accessible to all.
