Young V&A (formerly Museum Of Childhood)
As a Storymaker with Young V&A, you’ll be igniting the imaginations of 5–14 year olds, encouraging engagement with interactives, collections and spaces in the Imagine Gallery, supporting them to become Storymakers too. You’ll be helping visitors to create their own stories inspired by the museum’s collection, getting them animating the shadow puppets, or supporting programmed performances on The Stage. Young V&A is a museum of doers, makers, dreamers, players and thinkers. Designed by young people, for young people, we’ve completely reimagined what a museum for young visitors can be. As a Young V&A volunteer you can help young people to get curious and creative, bringing the museum's collection to life through the wonders of creative play, imagination, and design. As a Storymaker, you’ll be igniting the imaginations of 5–14 year olds, encouraging engagement with interactives, collections and spaces in the Imagine Gallery – supporting them to become Storymakers too. You’ll be helping visitors to create their own stories, inspired by the museum’s collection, get them animating the shadow puppets, or support programmed performances on The Stage. You will be: • Ensuring visitors are informed about programmed performances on The Stage and encouraging audience engagement in this area • Guiding on a variety of interactives that help young people to tell their own stories • Supporting young visitors to explore different ways to perform • Ensuring a great experience for a wide range of visitors by being a warm, welcoming presence, supporting with information and finding their way around • Joining a team of staff and volunteers committed to creating a joyful visitor experience. You’ll be volunteering alongside other Young V&A volunteers. Supporting young people aged 0-14, and their guardians, as well as a variety of other museum visitors. Our roles are flexible, and you can select the volunteering slot that works for you. We’d love it if you could try to volunteer for at least 1 slot a month.

We don’t require any specific skills or experience to sign up to become a Storymaker. However, we’d love it if you had a friendly, welcoming attitude and a passion for speaking with and supporting the development of young audiences. Role specific training and support will be given throughout. As this role will include supporting young people, a background check (enhanced DBS) will be required. Young V&A will make arrangements for this, including payment, for those who take on the role. We encourage applications from all backgrounds and actively encourage applicants from the local community.

Our roles are flexible, and you can select the volunteering slot that works for you. We’d love it if you could try to volunteer for at least 1 slot a month. We appreciate and value any volunteer contributions and we hope you’ll enjoy volunteering with us enough to stay for a long period of time. However, we recognise that you may need to move on as your priorities shift. There is no minimum commitment for the length of time you volunteer with us. However, if it has been more than 6 months since you last volunteered in a particular role, you will need to repeat training to ensure you’re up to speed with the latest developments.
