Action Tutoring
Action Tutoring are looking for volunteers to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in Maths or English. As a volunteer, you’ll: ● Work with 1 to 3 pupils to improve their English and Maths, either in-person or online ● Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just 1 hour per week ● Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils ● Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions You can make a tangible difference by volunteering for just an hour a week during school hours.
Every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their background. Action Tutoring is a charity dedicated to closing the attainment gap and creating a more equitable future for young people. We're building a diverse community of tutors passionate about educational equity. We are seeking dedicated volunteers from all walks of life to tutor and support pupils from lower-income communities in maths and English. As a volunteer tutor, you’ll: ● Tutor 1-3 pupils (primary or secondary), with options to support online or in-person. ● Dedicate just one hour a week for a 10-20 week programme. We provide the resources – you bring your enthusiasm! You’ll use our workbooks to deliver your sessions. We work with a range of schools throughout London, both in person and online. Locally, this includes John Scurr Primary in Stepney Green (E1). Whether you're a university student, a working professional, retired or simply looking to give back, your hour a week can open doors to brighter futures for these young people and make a lasting impact.
Teaching & Training
Good IT Skills, Maths, Organising & Planning, Reading & Writing
We look for volunteers who have or are studying for a degree (in any subject) and have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor, or a similar subject If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We take all previous experience into consideration, so please include anything you think might be relevant. Programmes run during term-time, usually before, during or after the school day. You can sign up at any time throughout the year.
You will gain: comprehensive training (2-hour induction), ongoing support from your dedicated programme coordinator and our online learning platform, structured session plans and workbooks, travel expense reimbursement (up to £5 per session) and free DBS check. Through tutoring with us our volunteers are able to develop a wealth of transferable skills, including: facilitation, initiative, working with children, communication, planning, emotional intelligence and resilience
