If you have an interest in learning and want to gain experience of supporting children and families in a museum environment, then this role could be perfect for you! As a Learning Volunteer you'll support families and schools during their visit to London Museum Docklands, ensuring that they have a highly enjoyable experience. You can volunteer during term-time or school holidays. No previous experience is needed, as training will be provided.
London Museum Docklands’ Learning Department engages thousands of people each year through high-quality schools and family programmes. We are currently looking for enthusiastic individuals to support our work, joining the Learning Volunteer Team, starting at Easter 2025. If you have an interest in learning and gaining experience in a museum environment, then this could be the perfect volunteer role for you! As a Learning Volunteer you will support families and schools during their museum visit, ensuring that they have a highly enjoyable experience. Activities include: • Supporting staff and freelancers to deliver a range of informal learning activities for schools and families, such as arts and crafts, object-handling and workshops • Welcoming schools upon arrival and helping them out during their visit • Helping with the preparation of resources and materials and supporting the delivery of large-scale events We have opportunities for volunteers to help during term-time or during school holidays. Term-time weekday volunteering: • Meet and greet schools upon arrival and look after them during their visit • Assist schools during their time in the galleries, eg helping with activity sheets and answering questions • Support schools’ workshops • Support staff to facilitate object-handling for schools Weekend and school holiday weekday volunteering: • Support staff and freelancers in delivering a range of informal learning sessions for families, including under 5s and their carers • Interact with families to support their learning and enjoyment during activities • Help with the preparation of resources and materials and support the delivery of large-scale events • Support staff to facilitate object-handling for families Previous experience is not essential as full training is provided. It is not essential to have previous experience for this role, as you’ll receive free training in working with schools and families. We are looking for applicants who are confident in engaging with family and school audiences, approachable and friendly. You do not need prior knowledge of the museum collection, although an enthusiasm for the subject matter of the London Museum Docklands, and a willingness to convey this to others, is essential.
Through this role you will gain: • Experience in a busy and creative environment • Experience of engaging with schools, children and young people • The opportunity to develop your knowledge of museum learning and the history of London • Experience of carrying out activities as part of a team • Development of customer service, communication and organisational skills We will reimburse you for expenses for travel and lunch up to £12 per day. We will support your commitment to us with ongoing training and social events.
