Ragged School Museum
Learning Volunteers at the Ragged School Museum support the delivery of a Schools Learning programme. Tasks include: - Welcoming school groups to the museum - Guiding pupils and teachers around the building - Delivering object-handling sessions - Leading sessions, as appropriate - Ensuring SEND, gender issues and religious sensitivities are looked after throughout visits - Monitoring the lunchroom - Looking after equipment in the Victorian classroom
The Ragged School Museum is an independent museum in East London, housed in unique canal-side warehouses. It was London’s largest Ragged School, a free school set up by philanthropist Dr Thomas Barnardo in 1877. The Museum re-opened its doors in June 2023, following a £4 million National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) grant refurbishment. We run a lively schools education programme, family holiday activities as well as adult visits and events which aim to engage visitors alongside wider themes of social action and the fight for universal free education. Learning Volunteers support the delivery of our Schools Learning programme. Tasks include: - Welcoming school groups to the museum - Guiding pupils and teachers around the building - Delivering object-handling sessions - Leading sessions, as appropriate - Ensuring SEND, gender issues and religious sensitivities are looked after throughout visits - Monitoring the lunchroom - Looking after equipment in the Victorian classroom Our regular schools programme includes two activities: 1. The Victorian Lesson, an immersive role-play experience led by an actor in the role of a Victorian teacher 2. The Victorian Kitchen Session, an object handling session that explores life at home in the Victorian East End This role is open to anyone interested in strengthening their communication skills. It is particularly relevant to people interested in working within education and the cultural and heritage sector. In this role you will gain: - experience of working in a heritage/museum environment - experience of working with primary school children of all ages - gain insight into the operations of independent museum - build and develop your communication skills

Previous heritage or museum experience is NOT necessary. However, it is important that volunteers are confident communicating with children and meeting new people. You should have a calm, personable manner and a friendly, pro-active attitude. Knowledge of the Victorian period is not essential, but a willingness to engage with that history is important.
This role is open to anyone interested in strengthening their communication skills. It is particularly relevant to people interested in working within education and the cultural and heritage sector. In this role you will gain: - experience of working in a heritage/museum environment - experience of working with primary school children of all ages - insight into the operations of independent museum - build and develop your communication skills
We are looking for one or two volunteers per day to assist with these sessions on weekdays during school term time. Volunteers should be prepared to commit to one day per week for a half-term period (six or seven weeks). The shifts run 10:15 to 13:00 with a break from 11:30 to 12:00. This would fit comfortably around school runs, making it a great role for parents of young children.
