Independent visitor
Goal 17
Volunteer who will befriend a young person in the care system and do fun visits with them
An Independent visitor is a volunteer who builds a positive relationship with a child in the care system. They will take the child out on a fun visit once per month and also have weekly phone contact with them. An independent visitor will only ever be matched with one young person at a time, and it is a minimum 2 year commitment. Being an IV is all about building a genuine, trusting relationship with a young person in care. Your support comes from simply being there - accepting them for who they are and having fun with them!

We are looking for people who are fun, caring, compassionate, committed and a good listener. Whilst being an independent visitor, your main activities will consist of building a trusting relationship with a young person in the care system, visiting them once a month to do a fun activity and also having weekly phone contact with them. During visits, your main role is to listen, encourage, and just be present. IVs have an expense allowance, so you can go for lunch or to the cinema, take them go-karting or to the zoo, or plan a special outing - whatever helps you both relax and connect. Importantly, being an IV is also about having fun together! You will try different things, have new experiences - and above all, create positive memories together.
Many volunteers note that through being an independent visitor they have been able to build skills for themselves they would never have previously been able to do. Volunteer will also have access to an abundance of transferrable training including a certified L2 safeguarding qualification.
