Detailed Description

Hope for the Young is currently recruiting passionate Volunteer Mentors to support unaccompanied young people aged 16-25 who are seeking asylum, or have refugee status in the UK. Young people who are seeking asylum and arriving in the UK alone face a series of obstacles: language barriers, lack of social support and access to education, mental health issues, and a long period of uncertainty while they wait for their immigration status to be decided. The Mentoring Project at Hope for the Young aims to remove the obstacles that young people who are seeking asylum or with refugee status face in getting an education. As a trained Volunteer Mentor you will provide tailored one-to-one support and advice which will enable them to reach their full potential and help them make the difficult transition to life in the UK. Volunteer Mentors spend 1 to 3 hours a week with a young person, providing tailored support according to their needs. Volunteer Mentors offer support by providing: • Practical English language skills • Study skills • Enrolment and education advice • Emotional support • Support in accessing other support services and social activities

What skills are required for this role

Language Skills

Why these skills are required

Our mentors come from all walks of life, professions and backgrounds. These differences are part of the strength of our programme and allow us to explore fantastic matches between mentors and mentees, based on shared interests, experiences and personalities. There are, however, some core values which our successful mentors share: • Passionate to make a difference in the life of a young refugee or asylum seeker • Warmth, openness and patience • Willingness to listen and able to create a supportive environment for a young person • Eagerness to learn and improve your own knowledge and to ask Hope for the Young for support where necessary • Proactive in finding solutions to a young person’s problems or challenges

What is in it for you

By becoming a mentor you will have the opportunity to create a valuable and long-lasting relationship that will change a young person’s life for the better. You will be the one that your mentee will looks to for advice and support. Without our volunteers, the young people would continue to be isolated and unable to progress at the rate they should. But every successful mentoring relationship is a mutual one. In addition to the satisfaction of making this huge impact, you will also benefit from: • An induction and training programme into the role of mentoring young refugee and asylum seekers • Regular meetings and support from your Mentoring Programme Coordinator • The opportunity to share experiences with other mentors at volunteer meetings and social events • Valuable experience in developing your mentoring skills with vulnerable young people • All reasonable expenses (eg travel and refreshments during meetings).
