About Housing Justice: Housing Justice is the leading voice for Christian action on homelessness and housing needs. For decades, we've been working at the heart of communities, bringing people together to provide hope, dignity, and solutions for those facing housing insecurity. Our mission? To ensure everyone has a safe and secure place to live. Whether it’s advocating for policy change, empowering local churches to host night shelters, or running groundbreaking programs like Citadel, we tackle housing inequality with compassion and determination. What is the Citadel Program? The Citadel program is an innovative initiative by Housing Justice, designed to give those at risk of homelessness the support they need to rebuild their lives. Operating across South East London, Citadel pairs volunteers with individuals who are navigating the challenges of securing stable housing. Volunteers act as mentors, guides, and allies, helping clients access housing opportunities, build their confidence, and connect with vital resources. This isn’t just a housing program—it’s a people program. It’s about creating a community where no one is left behind. Why Volunteer with Us? .Benefits of Volunteering with Citadel. Expenses Covered: - Reimbursement for travel, tea/coffee, and other small costs related to volunteering. Charity Sector Experience: - Gain valuable experience working within the charity and housing sector, which can be difficult to enter without prior experience. - Strengthen your CV and increase employability for roles in charities, social work, housing, and community support. - Build connections with professionals in the field, opening doors to potential career opportunities. Making a Meaningful Difference: - Directly support someone at risk of or experiencing homelessness. - Help individuals gain independence and stability in their lives. Personal Growth & Fulfillment: - Gain a sense of purpose and achievement from helping others. - Develop deeper empathy and understanding of homelessness and social issues. Skill Development: - Improve communication, listening, and relationship-building skills. - Gain experience in tenancy sustainment, budgeting, and practical support. - Learn about safeguarding, trauma-informed care, and boundaries. Training & Support: - Receive mandatory safeguarding training and other role-specific training. - Regular check-ins and supervision with a Citadel Coordinator. - Access additional training on topics like trauma, boundaries, and housing services. Community & Networking: - Meet like-minded volunteers and professionals in the housing sector. - Engage in social events and activities organized by Citadel. - Become part of a wider movement working to prevent homelessness. Flexibility: - Commit to as little as one hour per week, making it easier to fit into different schedules. - Choose how to provide support, whether through emotional companionship, practical assistance, or advocacy. A Positive and Rewarding Experience: - Opportunities to reflect on progress and impact through regular reviews. - The chance to create lasting, positive change in someone’s life while growing personally and professionally.
