One to one companions
Age Concern Orpington and District (Saxon Centre)
We are looking for some volunteers to work with some of our clients on a one to one basis. This may be due to a disability such as a hearing or visual impairment or because they find being in a large group difficult.
The Saxon Day Centre is located in Lych Gate Road just off of Orpington High Street and provides day care services and support for carers in the local area. We have a range of different clients attending the centre, some of whom benefit from one to one companionship. This may be due to a hearing or visual impairment or because they find being in a large group difficult. We are looking for volunteers to support with one to one activities with some individuals. You need to be flexible in your approach and able to think on your feet and adapt activities to suit clients with specific individual disabilities. You may have worked with people with disabilities in the past but previous experience is not essential. You should be flexible, patient, enthusiastic and have some understanding of how disabilities affect older people. The centre is open to clients from 10 am until 3.00 pm Monday to Friday. We are looking for volunteers to work from 10.00 am – 12 noon and from 12 noon until 3.00 pm. You can work all day if you are available to do so. We will provide you with refreshments during your visit and if you want to have lunch with us you can order this at a small cost of £2.00. There are no age restrictions for volunteers but you must be physically fit and be prepared to join in and work as part of the team. You will be provided with an induction into the centre and will be required to undertake some training relevant to the role you have applied for. In order to apply you will need to complete and application form. We will need to obtain references and a DBS as you will be working with vulnerable elderly clients. This is a very rewarding and satisfying role and it provides you with the opportunity to meet local elderly residents and ensure they are not isolated in their own home.

You may have experience of working with people who have a disability, this may be visual, hearing or a physical disability. You will have an understanding of how any kind of disability may impact on an individual and the types of problems they may encounter in their daily life and the impact that this has on them.
You will be working with individuals to support them on a one to one basis. This role is very rewarding as it enables you to develop a good relationship with the people you are working with. This supports their own health and well being and facilitates them to attend the centre and benefit from a kind hearter individual who is interested in them and what they have to say.
