Would you like to help keep Sutton green and full of wildlife, plants and animals? Help boost the urban biodiversity of Sutton by undertaking practical habitat management at Beddington Farmlands. Beddington Farmlands Conservation Volunteers are working to manage and enhance the variety of habitats to boost the urban biodiversity of Sutton. We use a variety of hand tools to coppice woodland, scythe reedbeds, reclaim long neglected meadows and seed newly created wetland habitats. During the spring and summer months there is also a chance to get involved with ecological monitoring of habitats and species. Undertaking practical habitat management using a variety of hand tools. What skills are required for this role

Why these skills are required

No skills or previous experience necessary. We will teach you how to use a variety of hand tools safely. We do however ask that volunteers consider themselves to have a good level of general fitness. This is due to the challenging ground conditions on site.

What is in it for you

You will develop key practical skills and knowledge of the conservation sector. We will teach you how to use the tools and equipment safely and how to look after yourself and those around you. For those interested in ecology and habitat management you will learn why we do the things we do and how we expect it to affect the biodiversity end ecological communities of the site. Furthermore we will show you how to identify a wide variety of plant and animal species.

Time Commitment

Task days will run from 10am - 3pm. We will meet every first Wednesday of the month and then weekly on Tuesdays thereafter. We do not expect volunteers to attend every session within the month but do ask that volunteers commit to attending at least once a month to keep up the skills.
