Job Description: Hope for the Young is currently recruiting passionate Volunteer Mentors for our Mentoring Project in London. Hope for the Young supports unaccompanied young people aged 14-25 who are seeking asylum or have refugee status in the UK. Young people who are seeking asylum and arrive in the UK alone face a series of obstacles: language barriers, lack of social support and access to education, mental health issues, and a long period of uncertainty while they wait for their immigration status to be decided. The Mentoring Project at Hope for the Young aims to remove the obstacles that young people who are seeking asylum or with refugee status face in getting an education, by training Volunteer Mentors to provide tailored one-to-one support and advice which enables them to reach their full potential and helps them make the difficult transition to life in the UK. Volunteer Responsibilities Our dedicated Volunteer Mentors spend 1-3 hours a week with a young person, providing tailored support according to their needs for an initial period of six months. Volunteer Mentors offer support by providing: • Practical English language skills • Study skills • Enrolment and education advice • Emotional support • Support in accessing other support services and social activities Please read the attached Job Description and Person Specification for detailed information about the role and requirements to be a Volunteer Mentor.

Person Specification: 1. Experience of working with vulnerable young people, preferably with refugee and asylum seeking young people. However, we welcome applications from those without this experience. 2. Experience of working with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. However, we welcome applications from those without this experience. 3. Willing to travel to a mutually beneficial location on a weekly basis for at least 6-months 4. Ability to work on own initiative and a willingness to carry out a small amount of preparation for each session. 5. Ability to think creatively and problem-solve. 6. Excellent communication/interpersonal skills. 7. Good organisational skills. 8. Ability to cope with emotionally-demanding and stressful situations. 9. Motivated by promoting the wellbeing of vulnerable young people. 10. Commitment to and ability to work in accordance with all of Hope for the Young’s policies and boundaries.
