Job Description – Trustee/Director of Small Steps Statutory responsibilities • To be aware of the requirements of the charity commission and to ensure Small Steps complies with its constitution, charity & company law and any other relevant legislation • To ensure Small Steps pursues its objects as defined by its constitution • To ensure Small Steps uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects • To contribute actively to the Small Steps Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets • To safeguard the good name and values of Small Steps • To oversee the financial stability of Small Steps • To ensure the effective and efficient administration of Small Steps • To protect and manage the property of Small Steps and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds • To attend all meetings of the Board & sub-committees and give due notice and apologies where attendance will not be possible • To review all papers circulated prior to the relevant Board or Sub-Committee meetings • Represent (Write & Speak on behalf of) the Charity as appropriate when requested Additional duties In addition to the above statutory responsibilities …. • To be involved as a Committee member on one or more of the Sub-Committees (Finance, Personnel, Fundraising, Premises or Effective Provision) • To use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they may have to help the Board reach sound decisions • To provide guidance on key issues and new initiatives where appropriate • To contribute to the Trustee Annual Report and Annual Return to the Charity Commission & Companies House • To assist where possible to raise the profile of Small Steps • To assist in putting Small Steps forward for fundraising opportunities • To be an ambassador for the charity Person specification • Commitment to Small Steps • Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort • Strategic vision • Good, independent judgement • Ability to think creatively • Understanding and acceptance of legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trustees/company directors • Ability to work effectively as a team member • Organisational ability • Knowledge or experience of business and committee procedures • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life – selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
