Schoolreaders

Schoolreaders is a literacy charity who recruit, train and match volunteers to read with children.

Detailed Description

Schoolreaders match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills, as well as developing their confidence and social skills. Volunteers visit their school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children. Volunteers need to be over 18, have a good level of written and spoken English. Volunteers need to commit to a year of volunteering although time of course can be taken for holidays and appointments. What skills are required for this role

Reading & Writing

Why these skills are required

No specific qualifications are required for this role. Volunteers need to be over 18, have a good level of spoken and written English and be able to commit to one to two hours per week during the school day. We ask for a year's commitment for this role as this is where we see the most progress in children's reading.

What is in it for you

Our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week. Indeed, lots of volunteers become invaluable members of the school community itself. Our volunteers feel very happy when they see the progress children make with their reading over time and how they grow in confidence too.

Time Commitment

Minimum 1-2 hours weekly in term time during the school day.
