As a hand-holding volunteer you will be supporting anxious patients coming in for surgery. You will be available to chat to patients before their treatment to make sure they feel calm and reassured, answer any questions they may have and if required hold their hands while they are under sedation.

Detailed Description

As a hand-holding volunteer you will be supporting anxious patients coming in for surgery. You will be available to chat to patients before their treatment to make sure they feel calm and reassured, answer any questions they may have and if required hold their hands while they are under sedation. This role is currently taking place at out Moorfields site at City Road. As a charity we will be relocating to our new center in summer 2027 based on St. Pancras Way NW1 0PE. Friends of Moorfields volunteers perform an extremely important job ensuring that all patients who come to Moorfields feel comfortable, reassured and receive the best possible treatment regardless of the outcome of their appointment.   We require all volunteers to undergo the recruitment process which includes some online training and a DBS check. All volunteers must be willing to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week for 6 months.  We will happily provide references/UCAS statements for all volunteers and can provide support in finding work opportunities.

What skills are required for this role

Negotiating

Why these skills are required

Volunteers must be polite, empathetic and have good listening and communication skills. You will also need to be proactive and be happy to assist supporting people living with visual impairment/eye conditions.

What is in it for you

All volunteers are entitled to claim for travel expenses and refreshment vouchers are provided for those who volunteer for 3 hours or more. We will happily provide references/UCAS statements for all volunteers and can provide support in finding work opportunities.

Time Commitment

Every volunteer will need to be able to commit to a weekly slot of at least 3-4 hours between 7am/8am-5pm between Monday-Saturday for at least 6 months.
