Nature Trail Volunteer
The Sherriff Centre
Help us bring our Rewilded Nature Trail to life! 🌿 We need volunteers to lead guided nature experiences, care for wildlife habitats and create a welcoming space for our community. No experience needed – just enthusiasm and a love of the outdoors. You’ll gain new skills, meet people and make a real difference to local nature and wellbeing. Regular or occasional volunteers welcome.
The Sherriff Centre is looking for enthusiastic and community-minded volunteers to help bring our new Rewilded Nature Trail to life in West Hampstead. The trail has transformed an underused outdoor space into a vibrant, accessible and biodiverse green environment, with wildflower and native planting, wildlife habitats, insect hotels, pollinator spaces, a wildlife pond and interactive nature trail features. It will provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn about nature, improve wellbeing and connect with their local environment. What will you do? There are a variety of ways to get involved, depending on your interests and availability. You could: Lead friendly and engaging guided nature tours for families, nursery and school groups. Help visitors discover the wildlife, habitats and plants on the trail. Support the maintenance and care of the outdoor spaces. Help with watering, planting and seasonal gardening tasks. Help look after wildlife habitats and keep the trail safe, welcoming and accessible. Support outdoor learning and community activities. You don't need to be an environmental expert or have previous experience. Full training and support will be provided – we're looking for people who are enthusiastic, friendly and willing to get involved. Who we're looking for We're particularly keen to hear from people who: Enjoy being outdoors and are interested in nature, gardening or sustainability. Are friendly, approachable and comfortable meeting new people. Are reliable and positive. Enjoy sharing their enthusiasm and learning with others. Want to contribute to their local community. Are respectful of others and committed to inclusion. What you'll gain Volunteering with us is a great opportunity to learn new things, meet people and make a visible difference locally. You'll gain practical experience in community rewilding and environmental projects, learn more about biodiversity and sustainability, and develop confidence and experience working within a busy community organisation. Volunteer references can also be provided where appropriate. Time commitment We're flexible and welcome volunteers who can help regularly or occasionally. Sessions may take place on weekdays, weekends and during school holidays, so there are opportunities to fit volunteering around work, study or other commitments. As The Sherriff Centre works with children, families and vulnerable adults, some roles may require a DBS check. Appropriate safeguarding guidance and support will be provided.

No specialist gardening or environmental knowledge is required. All volunteers should be enthusiastic, reliable, friendly and willing to work outdoors. For volunteers interested in leading guided nature tours, we are looking for people with good communication skills who are confident and comfortable talking to groups, including children and families. They should be approachable, engaging and able to explain information clearly in an interesting and accessible way. A willingness to learn and share their enthusiasm for nature is more important than previous environmental knowledge, as full training and support will be provided.
Volunteers will gain practical experience in community rewilding and environmental projects, learn more about biodiversity and sustainability, and develop confidence and communication skills. Those leading guided tours will gain valuable experience engaging with families, children and groups. Volunteers will meet new people, receive training and support, and can receive a reference where appropriate. Refreshments and a café discount are also provided
We welcome volunteers who can commit to regular sessions, ideally 2–4 hours per week or fortnightly, as well as those who can volunteer occasionally. Guided tour volunteers would ideally be able to commit to a regular schedule so we can offer consistent sessions to schools, nurseries and community groups. Sessions may take place on weekdays, weekends and during school holidays.
