Crossness Pumping Station

Contribute to maintaining the gardens at a magnificent listed Victorian heritage site.

Detailed Description

Crossness Pumping Station is the jewel in the crown of the Victorian London sewers. Built originally in 1865 by Sir Joseph Bazalgette our site includes beautiful examples of Victorian architecture including the Grade 1 listed Beam Engine house. Our gardening volunteers maintain and develop our green spaces and gardens on site. From our formal Victorian garden to our colourful narrow gauge railway verges, the gardening team ensures that visitors have the best welcome to our beautiful site.

No experience required, if you're willing to get stuck in we'd love to have you involved. You will be a great match if: you have an interest in gardening and plants; you enjoy doing work outdoors and you work well as part of a team

What is in it for you

We also offer an in person induction and routine 1 to 1 check ins with our volunteer manager, hi-vis coats and vests, and a monthly volunteer newsletter to help keep updated with all that's happening at Crossness. Our facilities include free parking and locker facilities as well as a volunteer canteen with free tea, coffee, and biscuits.

Time Commitment

We recommend new volunteers commit to at least one session a week to get used to the site. If this is not possible for you please do get in touch and we can organise a more flexible commitment.

Lots of bus routes stop near Crossness at Carlyle road and Southmere lake, including superloop services SL3 and SL111.
