We Welcome
Museum of Youth Culture is the world’s first museum dedicated to the story of teenagers and young people. In a society where young people’s voices go unheard and their contributions are diminished, our collection shines a light on how youth culture has and continues to shape Britain. In acknowledging the history of teenagers as its own area of social history, we advocate for youth voice and the rights of young people in the now. Young people have always defied boundaries and broken the mould, and as an organisation we support future generations to keep up this momentum and do the same. Starting as a photographic archive, the museum has run a series of renowned pop-up spaces and collaborative exhibitions across Britain over the last 10 years, including a major summer show at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry and groundbreaking exhibition at the Barbican Centre on the Emo subculture. In 2025 we work towards opening our first permanent site in Camden, London, the first of a series of hubs across the UK to amplify local stories. In our mission to preserve and inspire through youth culture, the museum has been actively collecting this rich history over the last 25 years. Our growing collection encompasses 150,000 photographs, ephemera, objects and oral histories. Under the specialist care of the museum archives team, the collection follows Spectrum guidance on cataloguing, conservation and storage, to ensure all items collected are preserved and compliant for future generations. Acknowledging that everyone’s been young once, the museum invites the public to contribute to our collections and help shape the narrative. Our ethos around curating and collecting is building the story from the ground up and we invite everyone to have a say. In sharing everyday stories within our collection, we aim to create a People’s Museum. The museum is committed to building a collection that reflects the diverse experiences of growing up in Britain over the last century, developing programmes that ensure we develop an equitable collection.
