Detailed Description

Volunteer tutor Children from lower-income families are less likely to achieve academically than their better-off peers. Action Tutoring is a charity that works to level the playing field. We are looking for volunteers to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in maths or English. As a volunteer, you’ll: ● Work with 1-3 pupils to improve their English and maths, either in-person or online ● Commit to a 10-20 week programme, for just one hour a week ● Support either primary or secondary school-aged pupils ● Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions Good grades improve future prospects, opening the door to a wider range of opportunities. If you enjoy working with children and are passionate about social equality, you can make a tangible difference by volunteering for an hour a week. Sign up today: www. actiontutoring.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer What support will I get? ● Training (a two-hour induction session) ● In-session support from your Programme Coordinator ● Tutor workbooks with session plans ● Travel expenses up to £5 per session ● A free DBS check Where can I volunteer? Face-to-face opportunities are available in Birmingham, Bristol, Merseyside, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, London and Sussex. You can tutor online from anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Please note we cannot currently accept volunteers who live outside the UK. What skills do I need? We look for volunteers who: ● Have or are studying for a degree (in any subject) ● Have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor, or a similar subject If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We take all previous experience into consideration, so please include anything you think might be relevant. Programmes run during term-time, usually before, during or after the school day. You can sign up at any time throughout the year. What skills can I gain? Through tutoring with us our volunteers are able to develop a wealth of transferable skills, including: ● Facilitation ● Initiative ● Working with children ● Communication ● Planning ● Emotional intelligence ● Resilience Our volunteers say: “The Action Tutoring team has been fabulous in their support: timely updates, always available, closely following progress, and ready to intervene where needed, very professional indeed!” “Volunteering is very rewarding. I would say the skills that one develops from teaching the pupils are transferable into any walk of life and make you a better person. I would highly recommend it.” From Djibril, a Year 6 pupil: “My tutor is very nice and is always there for me. They help me in a way that I can understand. Thank you very much for always being there for me, and thank you for being supportive.” Not sure? Why not sign up to an open session via our eventbrite page!
