Primary School Maths Supporter
Number Champions
We train volunteers to help primary school children one to one in maths. The goal is that they gain enjoyment, confidence, and basic skills with numbers and are keen to participate in class. We ask for a weekly commitment in school time for the school year. The key requirements are good interpersonal skills and enthusiasm to help children achieve their potential. You should be confident with basic arithmetic. No previous experience necessary!
We established Number Champions in 2018 to help transform the lives of primary school children who struggle with numeracy or lack confidence in maths. We train our In-School Volunteers to use games and other creative activities in one-to-one sessions with children in London state primary schools. The goal is to enable these young children to overcome the ‘maths barrier’ and to be back on track to achieving their full potential, in a world where numeracy is an essential building block. Our volunteers are from a wide range of backgrounds, reflecting the variety of London. We do not expect any teaching experience. Each session is about 25 or 30 minutes weekly for, in principle, the full school year. Sessions are in school time, but outside the classroom. The class teacher selects the children for us to help. Former and current teachers, volunteering with us as ‘Mentors’, train and support our In-School Volunteers and have helped us to develop dedicated resources for them to use with the children. We also have an experienced volunteer Safeguarding Officer. We have regular online sessions through the year where you can get suggestions and advice from our Mentors or guest speakers; these sessions are interactive so that you can ask questions and hear other volunteers. We also aim to organise social events for volunteers to meet up. Our annual evaluation of impact shows that our volunteers make a very positive contribution to the confidence and attainment of the children - and they very much enjoy their volunteering. We currently work with seven schools across Islington and Camden - and over 30 schools in other boroughs.
