As a Church Sitter Volunteer at St George’s, you will play a key role in ensuring the church is open, welcoming, and secure for all visitors. Your primary responsibilities will include opening the church at the start of your session, which involves turning on the lights, placing the “Church Open” A-board at the top of the steps, and sitting at the welcome desk to greet visitors. You will provide information about St George’s, answer any questions to the best of your ability, and offer information sheets to visitors who are interested in learning more about the church. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to sell the World Monument Fund St George’s Bloomsbury Book and other church merchandise to visitors who wish to purchase them. At the end of your session, you will be responsible for ensuring the security of the church. This includes locking the portico gates and church doors, moving the A-board to the portico area, switching off all lights, and making sure the church is securely locked. Votive candles in the iron stand can be left to burn out safely. It is important to always carry a mobile phone while at the church so you can call for assistance if needed. To succeed in this role, you should have a friendly and approachable demeanor, be able to provide basic information about the church, and take responsibility for ensuring the security of the church. Strong communication skills are essential for interacting with visitors, and the ability to handle transactions for merchandise sales is also required. We would ask that you be able to commit to at least one volunteer day per week with a minimum of 3 hours on the day that you volunteer.
