We are looking for someone who can volunteer in the following boroughs supporting the MND Community Barnet / Haringey / Islington As a Befriender you will visit the people living with and affected by MND to offer a friendly, listening ear and provide emotional support. Knowledge of local services & support and able to signpost effectively - support provided. This is a flexible role that gives you the opportunity to help a person living with MND that may not be able to leave their own home.
We are looking for someone who can volunteer in the following boroughs supporting the MND Community Barnet / Haringey / Islington As a Befriender you will visit the people living with and affected by MND to offer a friendly, listening ear and provide emotional support. Knowledge of local services & support and able to signpost effectively. This is a flexible role that gives you the opportunity to help a person living with MND that may not be able to leave their own home due to their disability and so companionship is vital for their wellbeing. What’s involved? • Keep in touch by visiting in person, phone, text, WhatsApp, email. • Build positive relationships with the person you are supporting • Actively listen and engage in conversations, tailoring your approach to every individual • Respect people's way of life as well as the choices they make, even if they differ from you own. • Manage expectations and keep people informed, for example if you are unable to make an appointment date, communicate this effectively in a timely manner. • Use a basic computer database to record information about contact with our members • Set up and use Outlook email • Attend induction training by online platform Zoom, for 2.5 hours a week over 4 weeks • Provide two references This role will suit me if I: • Have a warm, welcoming and empathetic manner • Have good listening and communications skills • Have an understanding of MND and its impact on families, or a willingness to learn • Understand the need for confidentiality and the importance of data protection What’s in it for me? • Become part of a friendly and dedicated team • Get support from regional and national staff • Helping people How flexible is the role? up to 2 hours each week, flexible, weekdays, weekends and evenings What sort of training/induction will I receive before starting? You’ll be inducted into the role and informed about the Association. As part of this, you will receive e-learning, face-to-face training via zoom. The training programme will also include experiential and reflective learning.
