Gateway Centre volunteer

The 999 Club

As a Gateway Centre volunteer, you will help us to provide services for homeless clients in our busy Day Centre. You will work as part of a friendly team of volunteers and staff to deliver the essential services we offer. Gateway volunteers are key to the smooth running of our day centre service. Along with providing food and basic necessities, you will ensure that our clients are aware of all the services we offer and that their contact with the 999 Club is meaningful.

Detailed Description

As a Gateway Centre volunteer, you will help us to provide services for homeless clients in our busy Day Centre. You will work as part of a friendly team of volunteers and staff to deliver the essential services we offer. Gateway volunteers are key to the smooth running of our day centre service. Along with providing food and basic necessities, you will ensure that our clients are aware of all the services we offer and that their contact with the 999 Club is meaningful. Responsible to: Gateway Service Manager Days and Times: Monday – Friday 08:45—13:00 or 12:30—16:00, or all day with 1-hour lunch break. We ask you to commit to one session a week for six months. Duties: • Prepare breakfast • Laundry service • Run the shower rota • Chat with people who are homeless • Help to solve problems • Befriending • Breakfast and lunch clear up Training provided: Full-service induction Level 2 Food Safety Certificate Understanding the needs of homeless people Support offered: Full induction, training in relevant skills and knowledge, supervision, monthly reflective practice We provide: Lunch and travel expenses and a DBS check.

What skills are required for this role

Basic IT skills - internet & email, Cleaning & Tidying

Why these skills are required

You’ll need excellent communication and people skills as well as confidence and enthusiasm. You’ll be working with people who have varying degrees of vulnerability and can, at times, present with challenging behaviour. You don’t need to have worked with homeless people before, but a customer services background would be great.
