A Farm Assistant Volunteer can work in any areas of the farm where your skills and interests can be matched to the general farming tasks on any given day.
1. About us: Woodlands Farm, located within the Royal Borough of Greenwich, is the largest city farm in the UK. Run as a traditional working farm with conservation and education as its core values, it is an oasis of countryside in London. We manage the land by grazing cattle and sheep in our wildflower and grass meadows and don’t use any fertilizers or herbicides on the farm. The variety of habitats, animals, regular events and education activities run all year round offer lots of opportunity to learn and explore for visitors of all ages. As a charity we are run predominantly by dedicated volunteers who, based on theirs skills and interests, support various projects from land management, animal care and handling, to education and conservation. 2. What we are looking for: The Farm Assistant Volunteer Role offers the opportunity to be involved in the general running of the farm. We are looking for volunteers who can undertake general everyday tasks such as feeding and cleaning out of animals but also specific tasks related to the following areas: • Carpentry • Building and repairs • Electrical (qualification required) • Plumbing and Drainage • Painting • Metalwork (Welding) • Mechanics • Animal caring • Land management, including wood management If you have any of the skills mentioned above or others you think might be useful to our farm then come and join our team. 3. What you will be doing as a Farm Assistant: Depending on what needs doing on any given day, your skills and interests you can get involved in: • Feeding and looking after livestock (mucking out, animal handling etc.) • Conservation Management (cutting back vegetation, planting trees etc.) • Building management (plumbing, electrical, painting etc.) • General farm maintenance (fencing, running repairs, fire wood production etc.) • Engaging with visitors, sales • Assisting with Farm Events 4. Extra information about the position: Location of role: Woodlands Farm, 331 Shooters Hill, Welling, Kent, DA16 3RP Reports to: Farm Manager/Duty Director Length of Role: all year around Availability: We are looking for long term volunteers who can attend the farm at least one day/half a day per week from Tuesday to Sunday (9:15am to 5pm) Dress Code: Safety Boots/Wellies and weather appropriate clothing. Please be aware that as a Farm Assistant you are very likely to work outdoors in different weather conditions. Essential: • A good level of fitness, good coordination and dexterity • Ability to work well with others as well as on your own • Attention to details • Responsible and reliable • Good communication skills • Thinking and reasoning skills • Patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations • Ability to follow instructions • Be able to work within the policies and procedures of the Woodlands Farm Trust following all recommended Health and Safety procedures • At least one qualification or experience in the areas mentioned in section 2 Desirable: • Experience in conservation • Experience in working with animals • Driving licence
