ESOL Teaching Assistant or Lead Teacher Volunteer - Asylum Seeker Project

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join our face to face ESOL programs in Kings Cross and near Old Street North London . As an ESOL Volunteer, you will play an essential role in supporting asylum seekers who are working to improve their English language skills. You will either assist as an ESOL Teaching Assistant or take on a more independent role as an ESOL Lead Teacher, depending on your experience and qualifications.
Union Chapel along with a number of local partners and the Islington Council have been supporting the asylum seekers in local hotels by helping them to navigate the services that are available locally and more broadly, connecting them with local community projects, running regular wellbeing sessions, providing ESOL classes, as well as ensuring they have access to technology and SIM cards. We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to join our face to face ESOL programs in Kings Cross and near Old Street North London . As an ESOL Volunteer, you will play an essential role in supporting asylum seekers who are working to improve their English language skills. You will either assist as an ESOL Teaching Assistant or take on a more independent role as an ESOL Lead Teacher, depending on your experience and qualifications. Main Responsibilities: • Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes; • Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources; • Engaging learners in informal conversations or games during breaks to help them practice their conversational English. • Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class; • Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential; • Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements; • Following Union Chapel’s confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management and all other policies as relevant.

Essential Requirements: • To be 18 years or older; • Able to travel to Vibast Community Centre and /or King Cross. • Sensitivity to the issues surrounding asylum. Desirable • Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish. • Experience with asylum seekers or other vulnerable adults.

• To be able to commit to 2 hours weekly /fortnightly in the afternoon 3pm-4.30pm, 7.30-9pm • 3 months minimum commitment with the possibility to extend
