Role Detail

Primary School Numeracy supporter

Number Champions

Help six and seven year olds in state primary schools with numeracy through one-to-one support.

Detailed Description

• We train you to use games and other activities to interest Year 2 and 3 children in maths. • You will run weekly sessions one-to-one with young children identified by teachers as needing support. Sessions are during school time outside the classroom. The focus is on understanding the child's needs, building confidence, and encouraging the child to engage in learning. • Children fall behind for many reasons unconnected with ability; you will identify their gaps in understanding and help them overcome these. You are not a "teacher", you are an "obstacle remover" - the child does the learning.

What skills are required for this role

Maths, Reading & Writing

Why these skills are required

This webite demands a skill in the box above and then gives an inadequate list. We have entered "Reading and Writing" and "Maths" which will undoubtedly come in handy. The skills we really need are: Interpersonal skills to engage one-to-one with a six or seven year-old and to keep them interested. Confidence with basic arithmetic as taught to six and seven year-olds - adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with numbers up to 1,000. Passion for helping children achieve their educational potential. Any experience working with children or in teaching or coaching will be valuable - but it is not a requirement.

What is in it for you

You will have the achievement of seeing children change their attitude to learning and improve their skills As our volunteers all work in nearby schools, you will contibute to the development of children in your local community You will develop your own interpersonal, coaching, and organisational skills You will have the opportunity to meet other Number Champions volunteers at your school and if you wish to take a wider role within the charity Children of 6 and 7 are great fun to be with!

Time Commitment

Volunteering is in school term times only; we ask volunteers to commit for the whole school year. Most volunteers support 3 chldren, giving 3 sessions totalling an hour and a half weekly. You will also have travel time. In addition, you need to prepare sessions and make brief notes afterwards - realistically this will be an hour a week, although you may become more efficient after a while.
