Mentor for someone at risk of homelessness, offending or addiction

Bridging the Gap Mentoring

Mentors who will offer personal help, support and encouragement to people who are at risk of being homeless or offending. Initial training and support provided. Times can be arranged to suit you. Most meetings are in a public space, such as a cafe, but you may also meet online through zoom.

Detailed Description

You will be meeting someone who is at risk of homelessness or offending about once a week for 16 weeks. You will meet in any convenient public venue or meeting online through Zoom at times that suit you. You do not need specific skills. Your role will be to help them with focus, encouragement and support to achieve agreed goals. You may be helping them to fill in forms, to apply for benefits, possibly accompanying them to office appointments. We offer initial training and we provide regular support from an experienced professional who will phone you once a week and meet you regularly. You will only be matched with someone you are happy to help. You will need to have a criminal records (DBS) check ( though a criminal record would not necessarily mean you could not mentor). We will provide you with a mobile phone so that you do not need to use your own phone to contact the person you are mentoring. The initial training is at fixed times -usually early evening. But the mentoring can be at any time that suits you, including evenings and weekends.

Why these skills are required

No specific skills are required. Though an ability to use the internet and fill in forms would be helpful. You do need to be reliable and consistent and keep in touch with people.

As above, most meetings are arranged at cafes or similar public spaces. you will have an experienced supervisor who will introduce you to the person you are mentoring at a time and place which is convenient for you and the mentee.
