Spend time together through enjoyable activities, build a positive friendship, and provide encouragement and stability. By volunteering a few hours each month, you can help a young person feel valued, heard, and supported while creating lasting memories and experiences.
An Independent Visitor (IV) is a volunteer who befriends and supports a child or young person living in care. Children and young people in care have often experienced trauma, loss, and a lack of consistent adult relationships. For many, an Independent Visitor may be the one stable adult presence in their life. The unique role of an Independent Visitor helps children and young people build a consistent, trusting relationship over time. An IV provides companionship, encouragement, and reliability, remaining a constant source of support even when placements, schools, or social workers change. Above all, Independent Visitors are committed to keeping the child's needs and interests at the heart of their role. As an Independent Visitor, you will take an interest in a young person's life, hopes, achievements, and concerns. You will be there to listen, offer encouragement, and most importantly, have fun together while creating positive memories and experiences. Activities You Could Enjoy Together Going to the cinema Attending sporting activities Visiting museums and exhibitions Watching a theatre show Exploring a zoo or wildlife park Enjoying theme parks and funfairs Going out for a meal Sightseeing and discovering new places Taking walks in local parks Trying new hobbies and activities No special qualifications are needed, just a commitment to making a positive difference in a young person's life. With your support, you can help a child or young person build confidence, develop new experiences, and feel valued and understood. A few hours of your time each month could make a lasting difference for a child in care.
