Established in 1831 when the special constables act was given Royal Assent, the MSC became one of three special constabularies operating in London along with City of London and British Transport Police and as of 2024, the MSC is the largest Special Constabulary in the UK Special Constables can police in one of the 32 boroughs of the Metropolitan Police District and will be attached to a Basic command units (BCU) which consists of usually three boroughs per compass point geographic area (N S E W). The MSC make up an important part of the Metropolitan Police Service.
• No formal qualifications required (but you will need to pass a written assessment if you don’t have a GCSE grade 4 or above in English). • Age 17 to apply but age 18 before commencing training. • Be a UK national or have indefinite right to remain in the UK • Not work within a “precluded occupation”.
Being a Special Constable is a voluntary role, so we don’t pay you. While we don’t pay you, we do not expect you to be out of pocket so we will cover any cost including travel, meals, refreshments, and also pay you an allowance to cover the costs of maintaining your uniform. • Eligibility for the emergency services discount programme, the “blue light card” which can get you good deals on lots of items and services. • Use of Police Gyms and Social venues Additional Benefits. • Once you have at least 12 months service and have been awarded Independent Patrol Status, you can apply directly to the PCDA programme without needing any GCSEs or A Levels (Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship), should you wish to become a fulltime police officer. • You get priority over the public in applying for any Civilian Police Staff jobs. • You get to add to your CV that you are a fully qualified police officer – useful for applying to any job and not just jobs within the police service. • Try the role of a police officer while studying for a degree in another subject without committing to it. You can leave at any time if you feel it is not for you.
Minimum 16hours per month
